Q: I am related to someone who served on active duty during one of the membership eligibilty dates. Can I join the Auxiliary of The American Legion?

A: If your relative served on active duty one day since December 7, 1941 and is a member of The American Legion, you may join the American Legion Auxiliary of The American Legion.

However, if the qualifying Veteran is deceased you may join the appropriate organization, even if the qualifying Veteran was not a member of The American Legion when living.

Unit 45 was reactivated in 2014, after no activities or officers for two years. The officers are new and working to rebuild the membership of the unit.

The first project undertaken by these members is hygiene kits for homeless veterans. They put 10 kits together each month with towels, washcloths, soap, deodorant, toothbrush and toothpaste, shampoo, shaving cream and razor. Wool caps knitted and donated by a Lake Arrowhead ladies group and scarves crocheted by ladies from Canton First United Methodist Church are also placed in these kits. Members have been collecting used backpacks and similar zipped bags to place these items in a durable easily transported container for distribution to homeless veterans.

A "Poppy Day" proclamation was done by Canton Mayor Gene Hobgood and the members were out in force in several retail areas giving poppies on Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. Donations from Poppies are used for veterans and military families, only.
